The Cylon War is a fictitious interstellar war that occurred in the Battlestar Galactica universe. Both the original 1978 Battlestar Galactica movie and the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica miniseries are set shortly after that conflict.
In the original series, the Cylon war is also known as the Thousand Yahren War, the Thousand Year War and the Great Cylon Conflict.

The Cylon War began when the Twelve Colonies of Man came to the aid of an alien species called the Hasaris. This small and militarily-weak civilization was under attack by the Cylon army. The reasons for the Cylon-Hasaris war are never made clear; however, given the Hasaris' peace-loving nature, it is unlikely they were the aggressor. It is more likely that the Cylon picked them as a target. The Cylons were designed as war robots, and they needed a new enemy after they had destroyed their biological masters.

Despite the Colonies' help, the Hasaris civilisation was eventually destroyed by the Cylons. Following their victory, the Cylons set their aim on destroying the Twelve Colonies, who had helped their enemies.

The war itself has never been discussed in detail. The few facts that are known are that the Colonial Battlestars were constructed shortly after the war had begun, that a large number of battles of all kinds took place, and that, at some point near the end of the war, Count Baltar was chosen to act as a liaison between both sides.

The Cylon War ended nearly a thousand yahrens after it had begun. The Cylons made an unexpected overture for peace through their agent, Count Baltar. The Colonials, weary of the war, accepted. However, the Cylons had no real intention to negotiate peace. Baltar had betrayed the Colonials, and the whole thing was a ruse to catch the Colonials off-guard. It worked almost perfectly, and in one sudden attack, the Twelve Colonies and all but one of the Battlestars were destroyed.

Following the destruction of the Twelve Colonies, the last Battlestar, Galactica, gathered the few survivors into a rag-tag fugitive fleet, and set a course for unexplored space, away from the Cylons. Their goal was to reach a mythical Thirteenth Colony, called Earth, in the hopes it had achieved a technological level high enough to protect them from Cylon tyranny.

Best Scifi Show in years, August 17, 2010
    Vernon
"This show is great scifi. Hd-dvd helps to make it look great. But as far as content you can not go wrong with this. The show does a great job making the view interested in the characters and their relations to each other. Once I started watching it I went from season to season. It really will hold your interest. It is different from the original 1970's show in a few ways. But I think changes were needed to make it more modern. Overall I couldn't imagine a fan of Scifi not liking this."
Awesome Blu-Ray Set and Price!, February 25, 2011
"This set is a must have for any fan of the re-imagined SyFy Battlestar Galactica Series. Overstock had the best price for this set and it arrived in perfect shape earlier than expected.I would highly recommend purchasing this set, even if you own some or all of the DVDs, if you have a HDTV and decent surround sound system. The video quality is superior to the DVD sets and spot on with what my DVR recorded from my COX HD cable source. The Audio is AMAZING on my 7.1 speaker setup and again blows away the audio from the DVD set.The only issue I have with the set (same on the Complete Series DVD) is the internal packaging Universal used. All of the Blu-Ray discs are stored in slots between thin cardboard pieces with only the labeling of the Disc Number for the particular season on them. There is no season or master guide letting you know which four or five episodes are on each disc for that season. I realize most true fans know the episodes by heart, but this can be a bit of a nuisance when you are trying to locate a particular episode and you can't remember which season or disc it should be on.Best of luck in purchasing your set and enjoy one of the best shows on TV!"
Awesome series, phenomenal HD, terrible packaging., January 8, 2011

"First, the actual content. The series BSG was groundbreaking on so many levels. It helps to know your "current events" (what was going on at the time the show aired) particularly in the second and third seasons to really take in the implications of a lot of decisions and comments made in the show. If you are looking for a show that will grip you, offer you an experience no other TV show has offered, and want to experience truly accessible-to-the-masses science fiction then I definitely recommend this series. I've turned people who make the statement "I don't like sci-fi" into true fans of the show and believers in the possibilities offered in the sci-fi genre. That being said, what were they thinking with the awful packaging!??! Spare the silly, unnecessary doll and use that money (and the money spent on the cardboard package design) to provide the show in sturdy cases that will last more than one use. Come on guys."
