     Cold Mountain, January 18, 2011

"Cold Mountain takes you on a captivating odyssey, as it intertwines the worlds of two lovers, separated by the Civil War. Ada is trying to survive in a world she never thought she would live in, as she attempts to restore her deceased fathers farm while also trying to adjust to the new world she lives in. After getting injured in combat, Inman decides to walk home to the woman he loves and along the way is faced with the trails of walking to his far away home. Cold Mountain is a fascinating book that anyone could love. Charles Frazier brilliantly portrays the way of life of many people in this time, a young couple finding themselves separated by the Civil War. I thoroughly enjoyed how Frazier used vivid details, I was able to picture in my mind Inman walking through the empty forest, or Ada trying to get through every day, it was like a movie in my head. I also found the way Frazier interwove the 2 characters stories so well. I don't have any critique for Cold Mountain. I found that throughout the book, I was incredibly moved by some passages, especially Ada's thoughts of hope as she is trying to revive her father's farm. I think Frazier is trying to show us that our passion to do something, whether it is walking miles and miles home from war, or an everyday task, we will accomplish the task because we have our mind set on it, even if we have to go through pain to get to it. Inman displays this, in the fact that while on his adventure, he runs into many road blocks, and places where he could give up or just stay where he is, But he doesn't because of the passion he has for Ada and for his home. I found that Ruby, Ada's help, says some deep things and has a very simple, but profound way of thinking, enough to make one envious. I think that Inman's adventure home could be put as a metaphor, in the way that it is like our life. We can come upon good times in life or we can come upon bad times. I highly recommend this book to anyone, because this book could enthrall anyone. Within the first chapter, you can't put the book down, and it will captivate anyone. Charles Frazier has created a brilliantly written story, therefore I give this book 5 stars, as it is one of the best books I have ever read."
